Programs

St. Luke’s LifeWorks’ programs for people living with HIV/AIDS are all coordinated under the auspices of Bread & Roses after the two agencies merged in 2001. The Bread & Roses programs provide services at three residences, Bread & Roses, Georgetown and McKinney Residence in Stamford for single adults, and McKinney Residence in Fairfield for families. Bread & Roses also offers an alternative therapy program.

Mission

To break the cycle of homelessness by helping people achieve – and maintain – permanent housing and stability in their lives.

Background

Bread & Roses, Georgetown - Opened in 1991, it was the only family-style residence between New York City and New Haven dedicated exclusively to around-the-clock and hospice care for men and women seriously ill with AIDS. Today, thanks to advances in medicine, many people with HIV/AIDS face a different challenge—how to reconnect in the community and improve their lives. At Georgetown, people in recovering health find the support they need to get back on their feet. The program offers up to nine units of permanent supportive housing.

McKinney Residence, Stamford - In 1987, St. Luke’s LifeWorks in cooperation with St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Darien and the McKinney Foundation (founded by the widow of Stewart McKinney, Congressman, 1st District who died of AIDS) responded to the AIDS pandemic by working to open the first AIDS residence in Connecticut. The first McKinney Residence opened its doors in April 1989. McKinney Stamford provides 10 units of transitional housing and five units of permanent supportive housing to individuals who want to stabilize their health and their lives and move back into the community.

McKinney Residence, Fairfield - A second residential program was opened for families in Fairfield in August 1992. This facility is owned by the Stewart B. McKinney Foundation and managed by St. Luke’s LifeWorks. McKinney Fairfield has the capacity for two families where one or more of the individuals in the family are living with HIV/AIDS.

Populations Served

Bread & Roses and McKinney Residence in Stamford together offer 24 beds for single men and women who are living with HIV/AIDS. McKinney Fairfield provides services to two families. Applicants must be drug and alcohol free upon admission.
