Program

New Opportunities, Inc. operates a seven unit scattered site housing program, and an emergency shelter with HIV/AIDS services and transitional living for the homeless in Meriden.

Mission

The agency’s mission is to improve the quality of life for economically disadvantaged individuals by providing the necessary resources to increase their standard of living, foster self-improvement, maximize self-empowerment and increase economic self-sufficiency.

Background

New Opportunities is the community action agency for Waterbury, Meriden, Torrington and the surrounding communities. It has operated in the area since 1965. The services provided through our programs are designed to increase the quality of life of individuals and families. Over 75 social service programs are administered by the agency.

Population Served

The scattered site housing program serves individuals living with HIV/AIDS and their families, who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. There are no clean time requirements, but active substance users are not knowingly admitted. Scattered site housing opportunities exist in the Waterbury and Meriden communities. The shelter accepts individuals and families from any geographic area.

Services Provided

The scattered site housing program provides case management and rental assistance certificates to program participants. The emergency shelter in Meriden provides case management services and 6 dedicated beds, as well as scattered site housing, for persons living with HIV/AIDS.
