Sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Housing and Shelter Corporation operates a wide variety of housing options for individuals in need. Specific to HIV/AIDS housing, Mercy Housing and Shelter Corporation operates a forty-five unit scattered site subsidized apartment program, a nine bed group residence program, and a short-term emergency placement for adults.
The mission of Mercy Housing and Shelter Corporation is to respond to the needs of those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless by providing them with food, housing, shelter, education and support services in an atmosphere that respects each person. Mercy Housing and Shelter Corporation advocates on behalf of individuals while challenging injustice in social systems.
Mercy Housing and Shelter Corporation has been providing services to persons in need since 1983. The agency began serving persons living with HIV/AIDS in 1988.
The scattered site program serves individuals living with HIV/AIDS and their families who are homeless or at risk, who may have a current or past substance abuse or mental health illness, who are relatively independent
and require or request some supportive services. The supportive group residence serves single men and women living with HIV/AIDS who are at risk of homelessness and have a history of substance abuse or mental illness. The “step-down” program is designed for women or men living with HIV/AIDS and their children who are in recovery from substance abuse. There is a short-term, emergency placement for HIV/AIDS+ adults which can be accessed for up to three months while permanent housing is pursued. These programs primarily serve individuals from the Greater Hartford or Middletown area.
