Mission
"Independence Northwest is a cross disability organization that assists persons with disabilities in northwestern Connecticut to take control over their own lives. We empower individuals to make the decisions that directly effect them. Independence Northwest recognizes the value and abilities of every person and seeks inclusion and basic human /civil rights for all people. We provide services using a mentor/peer model which assists consumers to develop self-help skills and fosters consumer empowerment."
Background
In 1988, an independent living center was opened to provide support services to persons with disabilities in northwestern CT. People with disabilities are the controlling force behind the organization and have a voice in everything that it does. The majority of the staff and Board are qualified persons with disabilities. They began their AIDS program in 1992 offering case management services to persons living with HIV in the Greater Waterbury and upper Naugatuck Valley. In 1997 the agency received HOPWA funding to start the Transitional Housing Opportunities Program.
