Program
McKinney Shelter, a program of the Community Renewal Team, operates an eighty-eight bed shelter for men.
Mission
Community Renewal Team’s mission is “Preparing Our Community to Meet Life’s Challenges.” The agency runs a range of anti-poverty programs in Hartford and Middlesex Counties to help people and families become self-sufficient. Programs include Head Start, Meals on Wheels, Alternative Incarceration Centers, Energy Assistance and Weatherization, Youth Services, Job Training, and Neighborhood Outreach and Case Management. CRT serves people in Hartford and Middlesex Counties.
Background
Community Renewal Team was established in 1964 as part of the War on Poverty. McKinney Shelter opened in 1987 following the death of a homeless man in a city park the previous winter.
Population Served
McKinney Shelter provides food and overnight shelter to homeless, single adult men who may have housing issues, substance abuse issues, HIV/AIDS, and/or mental illness. Residents are expected to work with a case manager in order to stay at the shelter.
Services Provided
Services at McKinney Shelter include case management, individual counseling, substance abuse groups, on-site medical services and referral services. The Shelter also provides meals and hygiene supplies. Clothing is provided on an emergency basis. Twenty-four hour staff is available on-site.
