Program
Birmingham Group Health Services’ (BGHS) Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) program provides housing assistance and support to HIV/AIDS clients living in the Lower Naugatuck Valley area. HOPWA staff work with other service providers within the region. Services offered include: short-term mortgage, rent and utility assistance (STMRU) accessible for up to 21 weeks in any given calendar year; transitional housing support for up to 12 months; permanent placement dollars; and other housing related services such as advocacy, referrals, information, and linkages with existing housing resources. In addition, when eligible, HOPWA clients can also be referred to Ryan White resources.

Mission
The mission of Birmingham Group Health Services, Inc. is to improve community health and the quality of life of individuals by providing mental health, addiction and domestic violence services.

Background
Birmingham Group Health Services’ HOPWA (Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS) program has been serving clients since 2004. It is the philosophy of HOPWA to promote housing stability and improved health outcomes among individuals living in the Naugatuck Valley area who are infected with HIV/AIDS by providing housing support and advocacy. HOPWA also supports a harm reduction philosophy in providing these services.
